Male grooming was once little more than a dirty word. Thankfully, these days, men understand that they can put a little more in their routine that a weekly shower and spraying on some deodorant when they realise that they are making that unpleasant smell. But while things have changed, it’s easy to get lost in all the advice and guidance out there. So, here are the important bathroom grooming habits that every man (and gentleman) should adopt.
Invest in your bathroom
If you’re going to instil good bathroom habits in yourself, you’re good to need a good bathroom. Unfortunately many men make do with the bathroom that’s available to them, when spending a little extra money and investing in high quality furnishings and equipment can make a world of difference.
Take a look at the state of your current bathroom and evaluate everything from the showerheads to bathroom basins. Giving it a makeover not only makes you feel better about it but also offers you the chance to start off a new regimen of grooming habits.
Maintain your beard
Beards are still riding a wave of enormous popularity but too many men take this as opportunity simply to let their facial fuzz grow out – wild and untamed. A well maintained beard can be a thing of beauty, but just letting your facial hair form into a Viking-like mass in front of your mouth is not doing you any favours. So find a length that’s good for you and stick to it.
Whether that’s fashionable stubble, a neat goatee or a full beard you need to put the time an effort in. Buy an electric razor and other products like beard oil to ensure that it never looks frizzy or split.
If you don’t have a moisturising routine yet, it’s time to start. Your skin is your body’s first level of defence against everything the world throws at you, and if it’s let to cope on its own it can get dry, flaky and dull. And while we are on the subject of skin, it’s important to remember that you should never use soap or shower gel to wash your face. This can have the effect of drying out and damaging skin ever further. Instead, make use of a facial cleanser and then apply moisturiser afterwards.
Take your teeth seriously
Your teeth are important and you need to take care of them. That means that you really need to listen to the advice of your dentist and put it into practice. Statistics have shown up to a third of men do not brush their teeth at least twice a day. Even fewer use mouthwash or floss regularly, and this paints a rather worrying picture for men’s dental health.
Taking care of your teeth is basic and easy, and the costs involved are miniscule compared to the kind of dental fees you would have to face to have problems fixed. So brush twice a day (and ideally after every meal too) and take the additional time to floss and use mouthwash too.
Find a signature scent
Too many men have a huge selection of colognes that they pick up and squirt on at random every day. If this sounds like you, it’s time to focus and find a smell that you can associate with your look and style.
That doesn’t mean that you need to have a single fragrance that you wear every day. In fact it’s often best to have a few different scents available depending on the season or the weather. Just make sure that you pick appropriate colognes – warm and spicy smells for colder evenings, fresh and crisps scents for the summer months.
Treat your hair properly
This is a multi-step process but it’s important to invest your time into it. When your hair looks good it completely revolutionises your appearance, but when it looks bad, it can ruin all your good work. So first, buy shampoo and conditioner that’s right for your hair type. Also, make sure that you’re washing your hair correctly. Many men tend to be too aggressive when lathering their shampoo and trying their hair with a towel. This can cause damage to the hair and scalp, undoing all the work of the shampoo.
